Spicebird Beta 0.7 Released!

Spicebird is a collaboration client that provides integrated access to email, contacts, calendaring and instant messaging in a single application. It provides easy access to various web services while retaining all the advantages of a desktop application. The application is based on projects like Thunderbird, Lightning and Telepathy and adds more functionality and integration among its components.

This release of Spicebird adds the following functionality:

  • Chat with friends on services like Yahoo, Google Talk, AIM, ICQ and Jabber
  • Add iGoogle Gadgets to Spicebird
  • Disable the applications that are unused
  • Access Google calendar
  • Experimental support for managing blogs
  • Available in more than 10 languages
  • Basic set of add-ons
  • Import data from Thunderbird, Outlook and Outlook Express

Is there a To-Do list with this, that can be shared amongst my group?

How to "install" on Linux

I looked around the site briefly, and did not see that info, so decided to d/l and unzip it to see if instructions were included, but no such luck (readme says to go to the SB site...).

However, it did finally occur to me to try just running the "spicebird" executable script after a quick inspection seemed to indicate it is meant to be executed directly. It did start up, and acted about as I expected with an offer to import settings (although it was not clear if it would do both my SeaMonkey settings as "Netscape 5/6", and Thunderbird with which I have been dabbling as a replacement for SeaMonkey mail client - not bad, but I still like the all-in-one browser/email/composer approach of Seamonkey I have been using since Netscape 3.x days ;-).

Was that the right way to use it? Did I miss anything that would account for the missing gmail Drafts I noted in another posting here?

I also vote for importing Gmail contacts - or is that another thing missed by a lack of "proper" setup?

TIA,
RO

other support links

Though not perfectly complete, the spicebird wiki has some instructions for linux install at http://wiki.spicebird.org/Main_Page

The Support forum is also available: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=766934

There is some discussion somewhere in the forums about the contacts sync issue. I think there is some changes in contact protocol that probably need to settle out before Spicebird or add-ons will incorporate them. That would be a huge improvement.

I haven't noticed a problem with drafts (are you using IMAP or POP with gmail)? (If you haven't already, I would post your questions in the support forum - link above).

Cheers

Gmail Drafts Not Showing

On Ubuntu 8.0.4 I set up Spicebird 0.7 last night, and configured it to show my Gmail account via IMAP. The folders appear, and most have about what I would expect to see in them based on the labels (have not crosschecked each), except the Drafts folder, which should have about 70 entries, but SB shows none.

Two problems with new version

Hey,
While working on the new version I have noticed two problems which are frequently occurring with Beta 07.

1. I am not able to delete mails from Inbox. Delete button becomes unclickable. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=U4lV-CFl5dc

2. Threads sometime are not expandable. They just disappear if I click on them. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JFZwcveBd_E

Hope the videos will give you a clear view of bugs and will help you in fixing them quickly.

Details about my system
OS - Fedora 7 x86_64 [On AMD64]
Spicebird - Beta 07 i386

PS : I never faced these problem with Beta 04 and Beta 07 pre.

Re: Two problems with new version

Thanks for the report. In future please submit any issues you find on Spicebird support forums or log a bug in our bugzilla.

New version better than I

New version better than I expected...just get the outlook connector in place...it would rock

Thank you!

Working flawlessly for me in Ubuntu 8.10 with Gmail IMAP and calendar.

It is what I dreamed Thunderbird would be. A gorgeous interface, all the features I want and nothing I don't want.

I can't begin to thank you enough. Keep up the great work and you will have a huge success on your hands.

Lightning Calendar Issue

I could not import my Calendar data from Thunderbird 2.0.0.18. The system informed me that the Lightning version in Thunderbird was newer than that used in Spicebird 0.7, thus tasks could be imported.

Very, very happy.

Can´t import Thunderbird data to Spicebird 0.7

Just installed spicebird 0.7 but can´t import data from Thunderbird 2.0.0.18

Any solution????

Re: Can´t import Thunderbird data to Spicebird 0.7

I am guessing that you are not able to find the Thundebird profile migrator dialog in Spicebird.

To start the Profile Migrator, simply remove all your existing profile data (typically C:\Documents and Settings\YOURLOGIN\Application Data\Spicebird in Windows and /home/YOURLOGIN/.spicebird on GNU/Linux). Then when you start Spicebird, the profile migrator will popup and will show the Thunderbird option (if it detects Thunderbird profiles).

Thundebird 2.0.0.18 should not be a problem, we have well tested the profile migrator.

If this does not work, please write a more detailed account of the problem.

Calendar import from Thunderbird 2 (Lightning) does not work

The Spicebird Profile Migrator does not seem to be able to read the current Lightning calendar profile.

After a clean installation, I get the error message that my imported profile is messed up and the calendar functionality is being disabled.

It would be helpful to have the possibility to choose what I want to import from Thunderbird, instead of trying to import everything. This way we could choose to not import the calendars and just configure them from scratch in Spicebird.

Or... is it possible to remove the calendars manually from the profile? (What file to delete?)

Thanks,
Andreas

PS: Sunbird looks great!! I hope it'll work soon, also for me on Windows... :)

meant Spicebird of course,

meant Spicebird of course, not Sunbird...

Nice

Good stuff guys. How would one go about upgrading on linux? Simply remove the spicebird folder and create a new one for spicebird 0.7?

Installation in Linux

"Good stuff guys. How would one go about upgrading on linux? Simply remove the Spicebird folder and create a new one for spicebird 0.7?"

I always remove the existing and install fresh for updating. I normally install it in /opt/ folder so that I don't end up messing up other things :) Here is a howto I wrote for installing Spicebird :)

Upgrading in GNU/Linux

> How would one go about upgrading on linux?

Yes. That will work. Profiles are saved under ~/.spicebird and will be updated for use with 0.7 automatically.

Another way to upgrade is Help->Check for Updates.

Portable Spicebird

no source

the portable version author isn't also hosting the source code as required by the gpl/lgpl

Open source

Carstens portable mozilla stuff usually is the original with a compiled batch script as a wrapper. No codechange, so no need for supplying sources as you can get them on the project homepage. He just put the wrapper and the mozilla product in a 7z file. Very convenient.
